PARISH PICNIC – SATURDAY 21st JULY 2018

Sixteen Parishioners, led by Fr. Andrew visited Worksop Priory of Our Lady & Saint Cuthbert, where Mass was celebrated in the Lady Chapel.  After Mass we were kindly provided with refreshments and given a tour of the Priory.

We then moved to Clumber Park for our picnic which was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.   Unfortunately a planned visit to the Chapel of Our Lady was not possible because it was closed……………maybe another time!

SAINT WILFRID’S MOTHERS’ UNION BRANCH ANNUAL OUTING VISIT TO SOUTHWELL MINSTER – WEDNESDAY 18th JULY 2018

The Saint Wilfrid’s Mothers’ Union visited Southwell Minster on Wednesday 18thJuly.

We had a talk in the Bishop’s Palace, followed by a tour. Lunch was then enjoyed at the Saracen’s Head before returning to the Minster, for what we thought would be a tour of the Minster.

However, when we arrived, they were hosting a Seniors’ Cafe Service, which we were invited to join and to sing in the ‘Hymnathon’ …….8 rousing hymns with a short talk and prayers intermingled to allow everyone a chance to get their breath back!,

We were invited to add to the Prayer Tree, which many of us did., We then had our tour and a very interesting talk about the Minster.

A long day, but an interesting one!

SAINT WILFRID’S INVOLVEMENT WITH THE DONCASTER FOODBANK

Saint Wilfrid’s Church first started to contribute to the Foodbank in February 2014, following its opening to the people of Doncaster in September 2013.   In our first full year of involvement, we literally helped to feed 5,000 people in Doncaster with our contributions!  During 2017, our congregation donated some 366 kilos of food.   Below are pictures of our pre-Christmas contribution.

Contributions are still urgently needed, so please keep donating during 2018.

Here is some information about the Doncaster Foodbank:

  • The Foodbank is designed to help individuals and families in crisis through the provision of emergency food supplies.
  • Local care professionals in Doncaster refer people with a food voucher to the Foodbank Centre.   Here they are given their food supplies, a cup of coffee and help in finding other professionals who can help them out of their crisis.
  • The Foodbank allows the general public to contribute to and support local well-being in a simple, practical way

The Saint Wilfrid’s Mothers’ Union had their Annual Theatre Visit this year to The Dome, Doncaster, to listen to The Glenn Miller Orchestra.    Prior to the show, 31 members and friends sat down to a Carvery Dinner in the Icebreaker Bar.  A most enjoyable evening!

PATRONAL FESTIVAL – SAINT WILFRID’S BIRTHDAY – THURSDAY 12th OCTOBER 2017

On the evening of Thursday 12th October 2017, we held our Patronal Festival to celebrate Saint Wilfrid’s Birthday.   There was a Concelebrated Mass with Bishop Glyn Webster, Bishop of Beverley as the Principal Celebrant & Preacher.

The Service was attended by over 200 people, including some 40 children from our School, Branton Saint Wilfrid’s Church of England Primary School.   Their ‘Jubilate’ Choir sang beautifully during the Service.

Also during the Service, Bishop Glyn confirmed seven candidates:

Before the Service, Bishop Glyn blessed the new Bishop’s Chair and a new Altar Frontal, the latter donated by George & Gill Armitage to mark their Golden Wedding Anniversary.

The fabric of the Altar Frontal is based on an original design by Sir Ninian Comper.   Our Church is one of the finest examples of the work of Sir Ninian Comper in a mediaeval Church.

HARVEST THANKSGIVINGSUNDAY 1st OCTOBER 2017

Once again the ladies of Saint Wilfrid’s Flower Club have created magnificent displays of flowers in Autumnal colours to celebrate Harvest Thanksgiving

We are most grateful for all the donations of food and fruit, by members of the congregation shown below:

All these were transferred to our School – Branton Saint Wilfrid’s Church of England Primary School – where a Service was held on the afternoon of Monday 2nd October 2017.   Following the Service, all the produce donated in Church and by the parents, children and teachers at the School was auctioned and the proceeds will be donated to Charity.

Below are some of the floral displays created for the occasion:
